The major importance of designs for differentiation and appreciation of goods can be taken into account by the acquisition of industrial designs or design patents.

Besides the Hague System, the community designs protecting the design in the whole European Community ensure a favorable acquisition of design patents with broad coverage.

Actions before GPTO and/or EUIPO:

• For national Design applications the appointment of a representative is neccessary if applicant is not resided or established in Germany.
• For community design applications the appointment of a professional representative is necessary if applicant is not resided or established in the European Community.
• German and community design applications are examined based on formal requirements only. No substantional examination takes place.
